Why is Windows 2000 chkdsk eating my files?
Week of July 6th Question
So only three questions were submitted this week, maybe next week there will be more participation. First of all,
Douglas Adams says so.
Anyway, on to the chkdsk question. Chkdsk is a tool for partitioning and getting status reports on disk drives, but
im sure everyone knows that.
I am assuming that "eats" means destroys or deletes. So why would chkdsk do such a bad thing? Well when chkdsk is
scanning through the harddrive if an error on the disk is found than the files stored in the sector need to be restored
if possible and relocated. More than likely chkdsk "eats" the files because the disk has errors and the file couldn't
be saved; this is more likely to occur on an older computer or older harddrive.
Maybe a better reward is needed to attract more participation....or daily questions instead of weekly questions.
If you have any suggestions about the Stump Me section feel free to submit them within the Question submit form.
If not, get ready for next week's question!
