Who wanted flying cars anyway?
Is anyone else tired of the same article title about "Where is my flying car?" in science magazines and websites alike?
I am because reading the same articles repeatedly isn't very stimulating, and also because flying cars are just
a bad idea. Seriously, could you really imagine piloting flying cars amongst the population you currently drive
within? People have an inability to properly, safely, and adequately control a slow vehicle in two dimensions, why
would these same people be able to suddenly pilot vehicles in three dimensions capable of incredible speeds?
Flying cars was an idea during the age of transportation expansion which unfortunately survived into the communication
age. Ignoring the shortcomings of the technology to create flying cars, the need or demand for flying cars doesn't exist.
Sure, everyone would love to jump in their flying car and zip about with absolute freedom of motion in all dimensions but
there isn't any practical use for a flying car over automobiles. Here are the three reasons why flying cars is an
obsolete idea.
Communication > Transportation
What can't be done over the internet or phone? When the idea of a flying car was first born the internet and
telecommunications didn't exist. With the necessity of leaving your work or home becoming less there is hardly a need
to have a flying vehicle that can cut travel time considerable; just instantly connect with the other party over the
internet or teleconference.
Talk about insurance rates!
Insurance rates for flying vehicles would be so high! Some might argue that flying cars would have so much more room
for manuevering that accidents would be less frequent. While in the air there might be more room, but the cars have
to land for the people to exit the vehicles. It takes much more concentration and skill to pilot a flying vehicle and
while software and computers could be created to handle many of the tasks of flying the vehicle, there still has
to be a human in control. I am disgusted by the inability for the average person to drive cars, whether having a
cellphone stuck in their ear, or just a complete lack of common sense, your average driver can't handle a car they surely
couldn't handle a flying car!
Energy
If people are currently upset with the costs of fuel for automobiles, they would definitely not want to pay for fuel for
a flying car! The energy required to roll a car perpindicular to a gravitational field is high enough, but nothing
compared to the pool of energy needed to power a vehicle agaisnt the gravitational field too!
So remember, an unrealized idea that has existed for decade after decade unchanged is most likely unrealized for a reason!
